Dragon Quest IX

Advance Wars Rom DSLet me tell you about a really nice game called the Dragon Quest IX. This game comes from a line of games that have endeared themselves to the heart of many players over the years. Whilst the game may not have a storyline as deep as that of the Dragon Quest V, it is certainly as fantastic as yet another installment, which is the Dragon Quest III. As an avid gamer, this is just one of the few games I have played more than once, and in fact, I have played it for the 3rd time already.

Story: 10/10
In the Dragon Quest IX, you are a guardian angel referred to as the Celestrian, and your job is to protect the Wollo, or the village of Angel Falls, as soon as the game commences. You are tasked to collect a sparkling aura known as benevolence, which is very essential in order to aid the Yggdrasil in bearing fruits. This tree is known as the World Tree. But as the story continues to unfold, things begin to turn a little more challenging because you will realize that you will lose your ability to fly; and in order to get back your Celestrian features, you need to hunt down and collect the fruits of the Goddess, which are said to be the missing fyggs. If you will be able to collect all the fyggs, you can have the opportunity to see the land of God.
The story I have just explained above is more of a simplified version of the fygg-hunt but you see, there are so many more challenges and excitement that awaits every player. I’d like to talk more about it but then that would spoil the fun and excitement for you. Please take note that Dragon Quest IX lacks the usual emo characters present in Final Fantasy series but this really shouldn’t pose a problem at all.

It should also be mentioned here that there are constant name changes for the Japanese and the English version but again, this should not be an issue unless you have played the Japanese version before. The name change are pretty much OK except that I did note that Alltrades Abbey was a poor choice of name, considering that it used to be called Dharma Temple in older versions.

Graphics: 9/10
I really like the graphics of the game and I could say it is at par with the Zelda games for NDS. You can find the battle scenes in full 3D, and the characters can be customized graphically from head to toe. There was just one part that I wasn’t completely sold when it comes to the graphics, and this is the fact that the NPC’s are sprites. You see, with this issue you get to be an amazing character in the game but you are surrounded with plain paper cutouts.

Sound: 10/10
With the game, you have the classic Dragon Quest soundtrack complete. But what’s even better with the Dragon Quest IX is that you will be able to battle fighting bosses using their very own music. And I really think this feature is just amazing. One thing I did notice though, and this is really just my opinion, is that the music for Quester’s Rest or the Rikka’s Inn can get kind of jarring if you listen to it for a long time.

Gameplay: 10/10
Well, the gameplay is what you would expect from a standard Dragon Quest installment. But it’s that and a lot more too. There are several changes in the gameplay, such as not being able to engage in random battles since they are now quite similar to Earthbound. There are quests that will most likely distract you from the story so you should be a little wary of this. Moreover, you can now customize your characters and you wouldn’t have to fuss over level grinding. What’s even more is that you can now help a friend through the story, and you can do this by joining this person’s in-game or you can invite them into your world. Essentially, the game is equipped with the co-op capability.

Conclusion:
This is one amazing game that you should never miss!

  • If you like Dragon Ball and the Dragon Ball Z, the character designer is Akira Toriyama,
  • If you like Final Fantasy, then consider the Specials in Japanese or the Coup de Grace for the US version.
  • If you like the World of Warcraft, then you can use your quests, get free customization, and even collect OCD items here.
  • If you like the co-op games, then you and your friends can enjoy and have fun with the game plot together.
  • If you like the Dragon Quest or the Dragon Warrior, then you would surely go crazy over this. You could get addicted easily!
